February 2025, Jane Austen Festival Newsletter

To our fellow Austen fans,
We are thrilled to our boots to announce that one September event will be going on sale very soon!
We are delighted to announce that we are partnering with the Theatre Royal Bath to allow our Festival Friends priority booking to their production of Emma. This will be our main Jane Austen Festival event on the evening of Saturday 20th September, and Festival attendees are invited to attend this performance in their Regency theatre-going finery… less any feathers that might obscure the view of the
people behind them!
You can book tickets to this event at the Theatre Royal website here, from 10:00 GMT on 1st March 2025.

We know those of you keen on sewing have been eagerly awaiting the announcement of our dress themes for this year, and here they are:
Floral Friday.
In line with our two Emma-themed balls on this day, take your inspiration from the gardens of Donwell Abbey.
Spectator Saturday.
To see and be seen! On our busiest day, wear the outfit that you would most like to be admired in.
Sporting Sunday.
“Why sporting Sunday?” we hear you cry! Read the full newsletter to find out why…
Muslin Monday.
We expect to see lots of Matilda dresses gracing the streets of Bath on this day!
Tassel Tuesday.
Add a single tassel or deck out your full outfit in them.
"On Wednesdays, we wear pink".
...it's a classic!
Thrifty Thursday.
Today is the day to show off a piece of clothing that you have reworked, resewn, rescued or otherwise given a new life to.
Fashion Friday.
Take inspiration from your favourite Regency-era fashion plate.
Stripey Saturday.
Don your finest stripes!
Blue Sunday.
Take your inspiration from Cassandra’s watercolour of Jane Austen and wear your most beautiful blue on this day. The perfect way to off-set feeling blue because of the end of the Festival…
Remember that all the themes are just for fun- join in as much or as little as you like!
However, our costume themes are not the only exciting news we have for all the dedicated followers of fashion hoping to attend the 2025 Jane Austen Festival…
We are absolutely delighted to announce that Lucy Adlington of History Wardrobe, long-term Festival-favourite, will be gracing Bath Guildhall on Sunday 14th September (a rare appearance down south!), to explore pleasures and pastimes in Jane Austen’s era, featuring marvellous original fashions for sport and dancing (hence - Sporting Sunday!), and hilarious readings from Austen’s novels. This event is supported by the Apex Hotel in Bath, one of our Jane Austen Festival 2025 sponsors.
We know not all fashionistas are able to join us for the first weekend of the Festival, so those of you heading to beautiful Bath for the second weekend will be happy to hear that Hilary Davidson, author of Dress in the Age of Jane Austen and Jane Austen’s Wardrobe will be returning to speaking on Saturday 20th September. More details to follow in the future, we’ll be keeping you in suspense for now.
And for those faithful Austen-fans who are with us all week long… we’ll be hosting a talk on costumes in Austen and Regency adaptations. Details to be revealed in the future!

So, fans of Regency fashion are going to be more spoilt than Emma Woodhouse this year. Book fans, history lovers and those of you who love to get out there and get active… don’t worry, we have plenty for you as well, to be announced in the future!

Until we meet in the sunny streets of Bath, all the very best of wishes,
